The Almanor Ranger District of the Lassen National Forest invites the public to join district staff to contribute to discussion about a proposed forest restoration project during a field trip scheduled for November 25th.
The proposed Grizzly project area includes approximately 5,900 acres east of Butte Meadows, mainly along Scotts John Creek and Humbug Summit to Milkhouse Flat. The district is beginning development of the restoration project, which would be located in parts of both Butte and Plumas counties.
Past management activities, including fire suppression, have resulted in accumulated surface and ladder fuels and have led to changes in this forested area. Over time, these changes have affected wildlife, watersheds, and the distribution of plants unique to the area.
Forest road 26N11, in its current location along Scotts John Creek, is contributing sediment to the creek and impacting a watershed that supports federally-listed anadromous fish species.
The Almanor Ranger District is considering treatment of approximately 3,200 acres. Potential actions could include relocating Forest road 26N11 away from the creek, addressing over-stocked conifer stands and dense forest fuels, and implementing treatments to benefit aspen, riparian, and meadow vegetation. Treatments would be designed to address a variety of forest health and restoration objectives, and contribute to the safety of fire-fighting personnel and neighboring communities by continuing and enhancing the Defensible Fuel Profile Zone network.
The public is being offered the opportunity to look at the planning area with members of an interdisciplinary team. The knowledge of local residents, users and people interested in the area is of great value and can help support project design. If you would like to contribute to this planning process, please plan to attend this field trip.
