Forest Service Reminds Public of Zone V Closure

forestserviceupdateOfficials from Lassen National Forest are reminding the public that the Eagle Lake Ranger District, which corresponds to Zone V on the Fuelwood Cutting Map, remains closed to firewood cutting.

The reminder comes on the heels of a major storm which downed trees across the district, leaving forest roads blocked and impassable. Today’s statement addressed storm related issues.

“The Forest is aware that moderate to severe wind damage has occurred in some areas of the District, and District personnel are currently assessing the situation.  Numerous trees have fallen across roads, which the District plans to reopen in the near future when it is safe to do so.”

According to the rules of the forest closure the public is not permitted to cut firewood to open roads, as this would be a violation.

“Anyone caught cutting wood or opening roads within Zone V will be cited and charged for damages,” today’s announcement from the Forest Service explained. “Should you need a road opened to access private property or have any questions or concerns, please contact the Eagle Lake Ranger District at (530) 257-4188.

Although the Eagle Lake Ranger District is currently closed to firewood cutting, both the Almanor and Hat Creek Districts of the Lassen National Forest remain open to woodcutting.  Depending upon conditions, Zone V could reopen sometime in late May or early June.  The public will be notified at such time.
