Garden Grove Man Arrested for Drug Possession and Auto Theft

policeupdate3An early morning traffic stop on Susanville’s Main Street led to the arrest of a Garden Grove, CA man for charges which included possession of a controlled substance, auto theft and driving on a suspended license.

At around 2:00a.m. Friday morning, according to Police Lieutenant Matt Wood, officers from the Susanville Police Department initiated a traffic stop on a white 2015 Hyundai Elantra in the 1900 block of Main Street after observing that the vehicle had no plates on it.

“During the course of the traffic stop,” explains Wood, “the officers learned that the driver, James Mendes age/36 of Garden Grove, CA, did not have a driver’s license. Further investigation revealed that the vehicle was reported stolen out of Los Angeles.”

During an inventory search of the vehicle officers located an undisclosed amount of cash, a variety of drug paraphernalia and several credit cards that did not belong to Mendes.

Mendes was arrested and booked into the Lassen County Jail on several charges including auto theft, driving on a suspended license, forgery, possession of drug paraphernalia and unlawful possession of a syringe.

While being searched during the booking process, Mendes was found to be in possession of a controlled substance by Lassen County Sheriff Correctional staff and was subsequently booked on an additional charges for possession of a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance for sale.

Bail for Mendes was set at $35,000 and the Susanville Police Department has referred the case to the Lassen County District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.
