The National Weather Service is warning area residents to be prepared for a big change in the weather as a cold front moves across us this evening bringing windy conditions, much colder temperatures and the threat of showers on Monday.
According to the NWS a dramatic change in the weather will occur today as a low pressure system and a cold front from British Columbia reaches the eastern Sierra and western Nevada late tonight and Monday.
As the low approaches this afternoon winds will increase with gusts of 40 to 50 mph across northeast california.
Gusts in wind prone areas along highway 395 may reach 65-mph this afternoon. The strongest winds are forecast to occur this evening and tonight down in Mono county where gusts of 50 to 75 mph are possible.
As the cold front passes and the low moves overhead tonight and early monday morning showers will begin to develop while much colder air filters into the region. This will allow snow levels to drop to near and below 5000 feet early monday morning.
Around the Tahoe basin and Mono county snow accumulations of up to 6 inches are possible above 7000 feet with up to 3 inches possible down to 6000 feet for monday. Those traveling over the Sierra passes should be prepared for slick roads and winter driving conditions.
Here in the Honey Lake Valley showers will produce wet and slick roads which may slow the Monday morning commute.
