Lassen National Forest has decided to implement Lassen Forest Order 06-20-10 (Sheep Fire Closure Order) to protect public health and safety. This Order is effective through October 31st, 2020.
The Sheep Fire is exhibiting extreme fire behavior and has grown to over 29,410 acres. These Sheep Fire Closure Orders will facilitate unimpeded ingress and egress for firefighting personnel and other emergency responders and owners, lessees, and residents of land in the area—while limiting public exposure to fire danger and impaired visibility due to smoke.
The Plumas National Forest has issued Plumas Forest Order 05-11-02-20-14 to accomplish the same goal.
The Sheep Fire Closure Area boundary begins at the intersection of California Highway 36 and the eastern border of Township 29 North Range 10 East. It continues south until it meets the Lassen National Forest border.
The other key areas are bordering the Sheep Fire, Forest Road No. 28N15A, Forest Road No. 28N02, Township 28 North Range 11 East, and Highway 36.
“These Forest Orders will assist the Firefighters as they work around the clock to hold this fire back from Susanville’s residential areas,” said Lassen Forest Supervisor Deb Bumpus.
“The Firefighter’s strategy has the safety of life and property as its most significant priority for utilizing their resources.”
The Forest Service conducted external consultation with the CALFIRE Lassen-Modoc Unit, local law enforcement cooperators, and McGowan’s Type 1 Incident Management Team in developing this closure. Forest Service employees with areas of expertise in fire management prevention, law enforcement, and public affairs were all contacted and involved in developing the proposed forest order and closure boundary.
