LMUD Presents: This Day in Susanville History – December 14th, 1883

Hunting Murderers
December 14, 1883

L. J. Flint came in form the north Saturday. He says the Madeleine Plains country is excited over the Shaw murder again.

E. V. Spencer of Susanville thinks he has found the guilty, and subscriptions are being raised to prosecute the case.

On Saturday J. G. Looper was arrested and brought to the Susanville jail by Deputy Sheriff Dean of Modoc County. He is only one of the parties suspected and Mr. Spencer says people will be astonished when the others are arrested.

It is now almost certain that the head found in Goose Lake Valley, 50 miles from the scene of the murder, was that of Shaw.

A detective has been at work on the case and he has developed evidence against other parties who will be arrested in a few days.
