Forest Observes 40th Birthday
February 7, 1945
The year of 1945 marks the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the Lassen National Forest, according to J. E. Elliott, supervisor.
In June, 1905, Theodore Roosevelt by proclamation, established the “Lassen Peak forest reserve”. Later, in 1908, it was added to the forest and parts of the Plumas Diamond Mountain and Shasta national forest.
Originally, Lassen forest consisted of 897,000 acres. Between 1905 and 1909 this acreage was increased by executive orders pf Theodore Roosevelt to about 1,373,000 acres. President Taft again increased the acreages to some 1,400,000acres.
The forest continued with this acreage until 1916, when 80,000 acres were turned over to the park service in creation of Lassen national park; 30,000 acres were added to this in 1928 and 1929. The present acreage is 400,000 acres larger than at the time it was established.
