LMUD Presents: This Day in Susanville History – January 4, 1906

Winter 1906 on the Brockman Ranch just east of Susanville

High Winds
January 4, 1906

The wind blew great guns in Susanville and Honey Lake Valley last Monday night, played some queer pranks, and did some considerable damage. In town a brick flu was blown down on the Oaks & Philbrook building.

J. Barry lost the roof of his wood house, and the heavy sliding door at the upper livery stable was blown in.

It is reported that a barn on the Sugru place at Howard Flat was blown over, another on the Longanecker place shoved around, and various small out-buildings tipped over in various places.

Two shade trees were blown out by the roots at the Lanigar place, below Johnstonville.

At Standish a rack was blown off the running gear of a wagon, and at Janesville many of the people did not go to bed at all.

It was certainly a high old wind, and the way it shook things up and assisted in the melting snow was a caution.
