No Injuries Reported After Train Collides with Boat Near Highway 44

A Burlington Northern Santa Fe freight train sustained minor damage Saturday after the locomotive collided with a loaded boat trailer at a railroad crossing on Champs Flat Road north of Highway 44.

At around 4:00p.m., according to a report released by the Susanville office of the California Highway Patrol, a man identified as 60-year old Modesto resident Gary Cunnington and his passenger were in a Ford F350 towing a boat trailer traveling northbound on Champs Flat Road.

The train was southbound on the rails, nearing an intersection with the road.

“The driver of the Ford failed to yield the right of way to the oncoming train and continued northbound on Champs Flat Road into the intersection,” explained CHP Public Information Officer Kristen Wilburn. “The front engine of the train struck the boat and trailer towed by the Ford.”

The boat and trailer detached from the truck and came to rest several hundred feet east of the intersection.

The Ford was undamaged in the collision and the train sustained minor damage.

Incredibly, no one was injured in the incident which is currently under investigation by the CHP.
