NWS Weather Bulletin: Forecasters Warn “Be Where You Need to be by Sundown”

A major winter storm will bring heavy snow and local whiteout conditions to the Honey Lake Valley beginning this evening and continuing until early Friday morning.

“Be where you need to be by sundown today, midnight at the absolute latest, you might be there for a couple of days,” says National Weather Service Meteorologist Dawn Johnson.

Here in the Honey Lake Valley we will see heavy snow tonight into Wednesday morning, with localized blizzard conditions, but then it becomes more showery with a break.

“As the front pivots back north, snowfall will increase again Wednesday night into Thursday, but not be as heavy then end Thursday night,” explains Johnson.

Snowfall of up to a foot is expected in the valleys with 18″ possible along the 395 corridor here in Lassen County. West of Highway 395 could see 2 to 4 feet of snow.

Johnson recommends that you have a back-up plan for school, work or childcare and she expects ground travel to become impossible at times tonight through Thursday.

To add a little excitement, there may also be periods of thundersnow tonight into Wednesday morning.

Avoid travel if possible, you could be stuck in your vehicle for many hours. If you must travel, prepare for long delays and carry an emergency kit with extra food, water and clothing. If you stay home, have a backup plan in case of power outages.
