Happy New Year everybody! The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Wind Advisory and a Winter Weather Advisory as a storm bearing down on northeastern California promises to bring high winds this afternoon and snow accumulations overnight and Monday.
The Wind Advisory will be in effect until 2:00p.m. today, the Winter Weather Advisory begins at 1:00p.m. and runs through Tuesday at 10:00a.m.
Forecasters expect the strongest winds will occur by early afternoon with the passage of a cold front.
Winds will be out of the west at 20 to 30 mph with gusts reaching 50 mph. Gusts up to 60mph are possible along wind prone areas through the Highway 395 corridor between Susanville and the Nevada border.
Motorists in high profile vehicles can expect difficult driving conditions with strong cross winds across Highway 395 and Interstate 80.
Winter Weather Advisory
The Winter Weather Advisory will be in effect from 1:00p.m. this afternoon until 10:00a.m. Tuesday.
Weather forecasters from the Reno office of the NWS are predicting that widespread snow showers will develop by mid-afternoon. Snow will continue, possibly intensifying Monday afternoon and evening, before tapering off Tuesday morning.
Snow accumulations today through Tuesday morning are expected to be 3 to 6 inches along and east of Highway 395, with 6 to 12 inches west of Highway 395.
Wind gusts up to 50 mph may result in areas of blowing snow with reduced visibility and periods of whiteout conditions.
Snow will cause snow covered roads with chain or snow tire restrictions expected. Gusty winds could cause areas of low visibility due to blowing snow.
