Forecasters in the Reno office of the National Weather Service have issued a Special Weather Statement warning residents in our area to expect an early season winter storm this weekend.
The winter storm is forecast to move into northern California and northwest Nevada starting Friday, with snow impacting travel in the Sierra Friday night, Saturday and into Sunday. Windy conditions and periods of rain and snow are expected for western Nevada.
Here in the Honey Lake Valley gusty winds are forecast for Friday and Friday night. Rain and snow will begin late Thursday night, with the heaviest precipitation Friday afternoon into Friday night. Snow levels should fall below 5500 feet early Saturday morning with accumulating snow on passes.
Total snow accumulations of up to 6 inches between 5,500 and 6,000 feet, with localized amounts of a foot or more above 6,000 feet, will fall in Lassen, eastern Plumas and eastern Sierra counties from Friday afternoon through Saturday evening.
In the Sierra forecasters expect gusty winds, rain and snow starting Friday, with moderate to heavy rain and snow Friday night into Saturday. Travel will be difficult at times.
Significant reductions in visibility are possible.

Now is the time to prepare an emergency kit for your home and car. If traveling consider alternate plans, remember to carry tire chains, extra food, water and clothing. Once the storm arrives, travel may be difficult or impossible for an extended period of time.
