Forecasters in the Reno office of the National Weather Service have issued a Special Weather Statement warning residents in our area to expect a windy storm Wednesday and Thursday.
According to the NWS the next in a series of storms is projected to impact the region Wednesday afternoon, Thursday, and into Friday morning. This storm has a fair amount of wind energy with it, but is relatively warm and moderate in terms of precipitation potential.
Rain will begin developing across the Sierra and northeast California Wednesday evening into Thursday. Some changeover to light snow at passes is possible Thursday afternoon into Friday morning. Western Nevada and the eastern Sierra are likely to see minimal precipitation from this storm. Strong south/southwest winds developing along the mountain ridges Wednesday, becoming strong in valley locations Thursday.
Strong winds Thursday may create travel problems in wind prone areas, strong turbulence for aviation, localized power outages and tree/fence damage. Light snow accumulations could result in travel slow downs over Sierra passes Thursday afternoon into Friday morning.
Weather experts remind residents to plan for strong winds by securing outdoor objects, trash cans, canopies, and construction equipment by sundown Wednesday. If you have travel plans around the region Thursday into Friday, anticipate some delays due to wind and/or light mountain snows.
Forecasters say that the upcoming weekend looks, “overall pretty decent” with seasonable temperatures. Another low-moderate end storm remains possible Sunday evening into Monday. This storm is trending colder with a greater risk of snow impacts for Sierra roads, along with an increase in winds.
