America: from sea to shining sea. This phrase epitomizes the diversity of culture and people of this nation. But where did it all begin musically? And which composers paved the way for our country by taking this diversity and blending it into song?

The Susanville Symphony’s February concert performances of ‘America: A Portrait of Music’ is the orchestra’s way of joining the audience with our nation’s past and present. Discover the roots of jazz and classical music; heavily influenced by both indigenous and spiritual folk traditions.

The music at this weekend’s performances features American compositions, evoking some of the most stunning and diverse natural landscapes on the planet as the backdrop for compositions that proudly display our heritage as a nation.

Conductor and Artistic Director Ben Wade will lead the symphony musicians, and the audience, through the history of American music with notable composers who helped develop our country’s unique sound.

Video of some of America’s most recognizable national parks will accompany the orchestra as they perform a variety of red, white and blue music; from Copland’s Lincoln Portrait and Dvorak’s New World Symphony to pieces from newly discovered American composers and a surprise from George Gershwin.

“Together the Susanville Symphony and the audience will take a journey of a thousand miles across the United States… from sea to shining sea,” said symphony Executive Director Dana Hirsche. “Patriotic, Western, Broadway and Jazz showcased and the historical significance of the American composer will shine throughout this concert.”

“It is a perfect concert for the whole family and will leave you filled with pride and at the same time reminding you of how great it is to live in the U.S.A.”

Concerts will be given this Friday, February 21st, at 7:00p.m. and Sunday, February 23rd, at 2:30p.m. at the Susanville Assembly of God Church on Richmond Road.

Tickets are available at Margie’s Book Nook and there is a special general admission student rate. Call 530-310-8111 for more info or visit the web site at www.susanvillesymphony.com
