The Lassen County Sheriff’s Department is releasing details of an incident we reported here yesterday which prompted an air and ground search near Hallelujah Junction on Wednesday morning.
At around 10:00a.m. employees at the California Agricultural Inspection station on Highway 395 reported an explosion and a dark smoke column east of the station, prompting fears that an airplane had crashed in the area near the Nevada border.
Lassen deputies were joined in the search by a helicopter from the Washoe County Sheriff’s office and located two men in a mountain range, near a vehicle, approximately 2 miles east of the bug station.
The two men were in the area hunting and were driving a truck towing a travel trailer. According to the Sheriff’s Department the trailer somehow disconnected from the truck and rolled, setting off the explosion and fire. The trailer was completely destroyed in the incident but the two men escaped without injury.
Cal-Fire, Washoe County Sheriff and REMSA all assisted the Lassen County Sheriff’s Department during the search for the source of the explosion.
