Small Trash Fire in Vacant Residence Thought to be Human Caused

A trash fire in a vacant residence on Riverside Drive Friday morning was quickly extinguished by firefighters from the Susanville City Fire Department and Cal-FIRE, doing only minor damage to the structure.

Shortly after 10:00, SFD Engine 621 responded to 2415 Riverside Drive, arriving to find a single-story residential structure with moderate smoke showing out of the rear door.

“E-621 assumed Incident Command and initiated fire suppression efforts,” explains SFD Fire Captain Andrew Jarrett. “CalFire E-2291 arrived on scene and was assigned to primary search.”

Incident Command, after sizing up the situation, requested that Truck-One continue to the scene and all other incoming units canceled their response.

Truck-One was assigned to suppression efforts and the fire was quickly knocked down and extinguished.

“The Fire cause and origin investigation was conducted while the overhaul operation was in progress. The structure was vacant,” details Jarrett.

“The fire originated in a 3-foot by 4-foot by 1-foot tall pile of trash in the back room of the structure.”

The fire was contained to the room of origin and, according to Jarrett, smoke damage was minor throughout the residence.

“The cause of the fire is suspected to have been caused by a Vagrant that had dropped something hot or on fire into the pile of trash.”

There were no Firefighter or civilian injuries reported. SFD was supported by Cal-FIRE, the Susanville Police Department and Susanville Public Works.
