The Placer County Sheriff’s Department is confirming this morning that the bodies found in the wreckage of a Cessna 170B that crashed near the Auburn airport late Saturday night were those of Susanville residents Bruce and Kathy Rhymes.
According to a brief preliminary report from the FAA, commercial airliners picked up a distress signal from the small aircraft’s emergency locator beacon late Saturday night.
The beacon was used by CHP and Placer County Sheriff’s aircraft who located the crash site, about 1/2 mile from the airport, several hours after the crash was reported.
According to the flight-plan information from the FAA the Rhymes’ 1954 Cessna had taken off earlier from a glider-port near Clearlake, California and was scheduled to make a stop at the Auburn airport.
No cause of the crash has been determined and FAA crash investigators are on-scene this morning.
