Weather Bulletin: Warning Issued for Sunday Morning Storm

There is a Winter Storm Warning in effect from 4:00a.m. Sunday through Sunday evening at 7:00.

NWS Forecasters are expecting snow to begin falling across northeast California early Sunday with heavy snowfall anticipated between 8:00a.m. and 2:00p.m. Snowfall rates during this period could reach 2 to 3 inches per hour west of Highway 395.

Snow accumulations of 8 to 14 inches are predicted above 5000 feet west of Highway 395 with the highest totals west of Highway 89. East of 395, into Nevada, 2 to 6 inches of snow will fall during the day Sunday.

Strong winds are expected throughout the day, blowing 25 to 40 mph with gusts up to 55 mph. The strongest winds are expected early Sunday morning
into early Sunday afternoon. Locally higher gusts to near 65 mph are possible along Highway 395 southeast of Susanville.

The snow levels start out at around 6,000 feet Sunday morning, then fall to all valley floors by Sunday evening.

Snow and blowing snow will create near-whiteout conditions and icy roads are expected impact travel on highways 36, 44, 49, 70, 89 and 395. Significant delays and dangerous winter weather conditions are possible for back country activities.

Remember that conditions can deteriorate rapidly during winter storms… slow down and allow extra time when traveling.  The NWS recommends that you carry tire chains, food, water, blankets and a flashlight in your car in case of an emergency.
