Good morning everybody! Here is a quick update on the storm that will be impacting us overnight and into Christmas Eve.
The National Weather Service office in Reno is warning residents across northeast California to be prepared for winter weather on Christmas Eve. The Winter Storm Warning will be in effect from 1:00a.m. Thursday until 10:00p.m. Christmas Eve.
Snow will begin across northeast California and the Honey Lake Valley tonight and spread south into the Tahoe basin by daybreak tomorrow.
Forecasters expect 6 to 18 inches along and west of Highway 89 with 2 to 8 inches elsewhere.
Strong winds will accompany the cold front with southwest winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph. Gusts over 100 mph are forecast on the ridges.
Road conditions will deteriorate rapidly before dawn tomorrow and snow and blowing snow due to winds will create periods of near white out conditions along with icy roads. Travel will be impacted with delays and chain controls likely on all area roads. The possibility of avalanches will increase… especially in the back country.
The folks at the NWS office recommend that you avoid travel if possible, warning that you could be stuck in your vehicle for many hours. They say that if you must travel be prepared for long delays and carry an emergency kit with extra food, water and clothing.
