Melvin Eugene Nierstheimer (Gene) was born on Nov 12 1944 and Graduated to Heaven on June 3 2026.
Gene was born in Missouri to his parents Roy and Helen Nierstheimer. The eldest of four, Gene was later joined by his brothers Marlin (Red), Terry (Moose), and David.
Gene started his adult life out living it in the fast lane, going on numerous crazy adventures and living as most young adults do, wild and crazy. But in 1982 he gave his life over to the Lord and lived sold out for Jesus from that very moment on.
In bakersfield 1983 he met and started dating the love of his life Rose Long. They got married June 29 1985. Together they would lead lives full of the question “okay God, what next?” Through this question the lord sent them to many places, many ministries and gave them numerous “spiritual children”. Although if you asked Gene he’d just say the lord gave them lots of kids! To him there was no such things as “step” “in law” or “friends that are like family”. Once you were brought in, you were family and that’s just the way it was.
Gene was a long haul truck driver for many years, and was so proud to have gotten to tour this great country with a trailer behind him and his amazing woman by his side.
In his most recent years after realizing “retirement” just wasn’t for him, this phase of life gave him the new title of everyone’s favorite Walmart guy. Gene worked at Walmart first in the self-check out line and then as a cashier in the garden dept. Gene always had a smile to give, a joke to tell, or an ear to listen and he put those wonderful qualities in to his work becoming one of the stores most beloved checkers. There was hardly a time he didn’t have a line half way out the garden department because everyone was willing to wait in line just to be greeted by this wonderful man.
Gene was a one of a kind human, to know him was to love him, and to love him was to experience a true blessing.
Gene loved the simple things in life, the smell of freshly brewed coffee, and evening in his rocking chair on his porch with his dog , and his wife, time spent sat around the living room laughing with his family, and getting to see people pass by from his community that he loved so much.
Gene is preceded in death by his parents Roy and Helen, his brother and sister-in-law Red and Aundie, and his Son John Moore Sr.
Left here on this earth are his wife and greatest love Rose, their other children Regina, Sandy (David), and Lucy (Michael). His grandchildren Savannah, John Jr. (Hannah), Jasmyne (Aden), Cecilia(Bryan) Brandon (Julie), Sabrina (Greg), Daniel, Shievelli and Jaxon. And his great-grandchildren Elyse, Olivia, Skyler, Amethyst, Zoë and Sapphire.
The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the customers and store associates of Walmart store 1616, you all made Genes final years brighter, and filled his days with so much love. And for that we are forever grateful.
Gene will be deeply missed, and this little town will never be the same with out him but his legacy lives on through his family, friends, and all those who loved him.
