Here’s Bad News Kids Council Forbids Shooting of Fire Works
July 3, 1932

Tough luck kids!—Here’s plenty of sad news for you! Susanville’s “city dads” have set a firm foot down at their last meeting Monday evening and there will be no shooting of fireworks on the 4th of July in Susanville this year.

After a lengthy discussion over the fire works sale question, it was decided that the city ordinance No. 187, as established, a year ago, should go into effect this year, starting on the first of last month and carrying through the fireworks shooting period until October 31. The ordinance was read to the council by City Attorney B. V. Curler, and City Clerk Riddell was instructed to inform all local merchants that the ordinance would be in effect and they are expected to cooperate with the board in preventing the sale of noisemakers to be fired in the city.

City Ordinance Cited

The ordinance reads: “It is unlawful, in the City of Susanville for any person to use or fire or set off any fire crackers or fire works during the period of May 1 to October 31 each year. Any violation of this ordinance shall be a misdemeanor and the violator shall be punished by fine of not more than $300, or by imprisonment for not more than 30 days, or by both such fine and imprisonment.”

The ordinance was created last year due to the fact that the firing of the noisemakers over a long period of time, as has been the custom in the past, was a considerable disturbance to the peace of many of the city’s residents. Aside from this, the dry season this year causes a danger of many fires being started in the vicinity due to the setting off of fire crackers. Also the fact that many minor injuries from the noisemakers have been caused in the past, was another reason which led the council to their decision.
